Unstoppable Men’s Tennis Team Secures Fifth Consecutive Win Against Marquette
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Creighton men's tennis team earned its third straight BIG EAST victory and fifth straight overall with a 4-3 victory over Marquette on Friday afternoon in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
With the win, the Bluejays improved to 12-6 overall and 4-2 in the BIG EAST, while the Golden Eagles fell to 4-12 on the year and 0-3 in league action.
Creighton continued its winning streak from the start, earning the first point of the match with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Senior Matthew Lanahan and minor Alejandro Gandini achieved a 6-2 victory in first place, while the second-year students Yuma Daijima and kirtan patel earned the doubles point with a 6-4 victory at the No. 3 doubles position.
Singles play was a back-and-forth battle with the Bluejays picking up wins in the final three singles positions in straight sets to clinch the overall double.
Senior Shin-Inoue began singles play with a 6-0, 6-3 straight-set win at No. 6 singles to give CU a 2-0 lead, before Marquette got on the board with a 6- 3, 6-3 in the number 2 position in singles to reduce the deficit to 2-1.
Daijima would then regain a two-point lead for the Blue Jays, earning a 6-2, 6-2 victory on the No. 5 singles court, before Gandini clinched the match with a 7-5 straight sets victory, 6-1 in the number 4 position in singles.
With the match already in hand, the Golden Eagles finished the match with a 6-1, 7-6 victory at the No. 1 singles spot and a 6-7, 6-4, 10-6 victory at the position No. 3 in singles. court to close one at 4-3.
The Bluejays will return to action on Sunday, April 7 for senior day against Nebraska-Kearney at 3 pm at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
